Bagnell Farm, set in 180 acres in Norton-sub-Hamdon, Somerset, is owned by Tom Priday, and farmed along with his Stocksman Mark Parsons. It is home to a herd of prize winning Red Ruby Devon Cattle, a flock of Jacob Sheep and a herd of Iron Age Pigs.
The Red Ruby Devon breed can be dated back to ancient times. Nowadays its native home in the United Kingdom is primarily in the Southwest of England. Their meat is typically dark red in colour with good marbling and with excellent flavour.
Descending from an Old World breed of sheep, Jacob Sheep are a rare and very distinctive sheep. The most common colour for a sheep is black and white (known as piebald) and they can have anywhere from two to six horns. Their meat is lean with little external fat.
The Iron Age Pig is a hybrid between a wild boar and a domestic pig, to recreate the type of pig represented by prehistoric art works of the Iron Age. Typically their meat has a distinctive gamey pork flavour. With their wild genes they are very tenacious and, even more than other breeds, are well known as escapologists!
