Strawberries, earlier than ever

April 25, 2017

You may have seen very early strawberries for sale at some markets, on Fiveways Fruit Farms stall. Julian Mead explains.

Fiveways Fruit Farm had a very poor start to their season last year. This year they've put a lot more effort into trying to get early crops, planting the earliest cropping varieties available, putting up new warmer tunnels and just for this year, renting a small amount of glass.  This will be their earliest season ever for raspberries and blueberries as well as strawberries. They hope to have raspberries in three weeks or so and blueberries before the end of May.

Storm Doris created a fair amount of damage on the farm, skinning tunnels which are expensive to replace. The farm is now back on track and the weather has been kind so far! It's good to have positive reports about fruit crops, with  a plentiful season predicted for cherries and plums.
